No not banned at all, one little boy that wants his little bit of fame has said the word **** should be removed. It a load of bull shit, in fact my wife read an article where he claims Kirsty MacColl has even spoken out against it, one has to wonder how he contacted her?

??? Not the same thing at all. They are clearly being called a *****ot. I hate the song always thought it was completely overrated, so if it gets banned, good.

**** in British well Irish is a lazy bum. We need to remember who we are. We are not American so British things should not be brought down to the levels of American slang,
**** is also a food well I use food very loosely, meat ball made from offal, but I doubt she's calling him a meat ball. But that is more likely than calling him gay simce the character is her partner.

You're not helping people ignore it by bumping a week old thread about it.

I would have thought that if the song haters had watched the documentary about the making of it they would change their minds.

I don't like the song (just like i also don't like that Slade song either) but it doesn't offend me and it should not be banned. Its just a crap song and i ignore it when i hear it on the radio.

I think we should just ban everything. Everything is a problem. The sooner we have nothing, the better off we'll all be.

I don't think it should be banned. I do think it is overrated and very depressing.

I can't stand the song and it gets played far too often IMO, but I wouldn't ban it. In fact I might buy it if it will upset the students a bit more.

I agree with over-rated. It's the Christmas Song for people who think they're above that sort of thing. "I hate Xmas songs, they're so chavvy and common .... except for Fairy Tale of New York, of course. It's IRISH, don'cha know?" Which always gets a pass among certain English people. Certain middle-class wankers, that is :-)

    Nonsense.

Look, the thing about songs that use these kinds of words is context - social/historical as much as anything else. If a song came out today with the word in it, then yeah, I'd raise my eyebrows and wonder why they'd think it a good idea to use the word. But there's also little point in erasing parts of history.

I've always been a huge fan of Kirsty MacColl, so perhaps I'm being biased here.

It should be banned. The word "f****t" is a highly offensive homophobic word, I thought we had moved on from such abuse and were more enlightened. I suppose the brain dead who chant similar rubbish at football matches enjoy singing this, it suits their mentality
It's not even a good song

Banned from where? You can't just ban a song once it exisits, anymore than you can put a genie back in its bottle. You can remove it from the play lists of certain radio stations or TV channels, but I can't see any chance of prosecuting anyone who chooses to play the copy they bought at any time in the past 30 years.

Besides banning a word doesn't take away prejudice. If we have learned anything over recent years its that having made certain words unutterable hasn't made the "isms" go away, it has just made them less visible and therefore more insidious and damaging. Personally I would rather have the racists, homophobes etc out where we can see and confront them rather than lurking around in the linguisitc shadows.

Simply having a Wonderful Christmas Time should be banned- if you want an offensive song there's one right there. Utter drivel.

Agreed. As the character is her partner, calling him an offensive word indicating he is gay makes no sense. In fact calling him a product, which while delicious, is made from the waste meat left over after butchering the good cuts, is a far more logical form of insult. It is a bit like calling him the dregs, which seems more in keeping with the tenor of the story.

The offal dish could be Irish in origin. It tends to be associated with the West Midlands in recent years, famed for its faggits un pays. However there was a big Irish community there going back to at least the 1700s so maybe the dish was somethig they brought in with them. Question is what did Irish imigrants call meatballs made from meat waste?

Its also a word meaning a small bundle of firewood. Not sure I can weave a cogent narrative for that interpretation into the lyrics though. Calls For 'Fairytale Of New York' song to be Banned - Page 2 (22)

If it is so disliked, overrated, why is it one of the most played Christmas songs ever?
    I love it.
It's catchy, funny, melancholy, tuneful, and tells a story.
    ****? Used to love them.
Mum bought me one every time the butchers van came round.
It's laughable that anyone would want to ban it. Or "Baby, it's cold outside" either.
    The world is going mad!
Next... BanBa Ba black sheep... . If it hasn't been already !

This pretty much. I feel the same way about editing out certain words from old sitcoms such as Only Fools & Horses. Granted, if you made a sitcom now where the characters casually used the p-word that would be pretty dodgy. This was back in the 80s though, the world was a different place then. As I see it, these things serve as a reminder of how we have progressed with the times. I don't see what can be gained from airbrushing bits of history.
