Hiner Saleem (also transliterated as Hiner Salim) is an Iraqi–Kurdish film director. His memoir, My Father's Rifle, has been translated into several languages. Hiner Saleem was born in the town of Aqrah in Iraqi Kurdistan. He left Iraq at the age of 17, and soon made his way to Italy, where he completed school and attended university. Later on, he moved to France where he lives now. In 1992, after the First Gulf War, he filmed undercover the living conditions of Iraqi Kurds. This footage was shown at the Venice Film Festival. In 1997, he made his first movie Vive la marie ... et la liberation du Kurdistan. This was followed by the films Passeurs de rêves (Beyond Our Dreams; 2000) Vodka Lemon (2003), Kilomètre Zéro (2005), Dol (2007), and Les Toits de Paris (Beneath the Rooftops of Paris; 2007).

Africiné - Hiner Saleem directed the internationally popular VODKA LEMON, winner of the Contro Corrente Grand Prize at the 2003 Venice Film Festival.
Saleem, a Paris resident for the past 10 years, was born in Iraqi Kurdistan in 1964. At 17, he fled to Italy via Syria to escape Saddam Hussein's oppressive regime. A fervent advocate for Kurdish rights, he recognizes April 9, 2003 - the fall of Saddam Hussein - as the most beautiful day in his life.
KILOMETRE ZERO is his fourth film and marks the first time he shoots a film in his native Iraqi Kurdistan.
Hiner Saleem is also an acclaimed author. His autobiographical "My Father's Rifle : A Childhood in Kurdistan" has been published in over a dozen countries.

Born in 1964 in Akré, Iraq, Hiner Saleem first gained international attention when his undercover footage of the living conditions of Iraqi Kurds was shown at the Venice Film Festival in 1992. Since Saleem’s debut feature, Kebab Connection (1998), he has written and directed several films including Beyond our Dreams (1999) and Vodka Lemon (2003), which was awarded Best Film at the Venice Film Festival in 2005. His feature film, Kilomètre Zéro (2004), was part of the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival and was followed in 2007 by the release of Dol ou la Vallée des Tambours (Beneath the Rooftops of Paris) (2007) and If You Die, I’ll Kill You (2011). My Sweet Pepper Land has won the special Jury Award at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, Best Film at the Chicago Film Festival and Best Film at the Duhok Film Festival in Kurdistan.
