Minefield Success (2025)

1. Minefield|A Team collaboration and Silo busting game - RSVP Design

  • An experiential learning game to enhance collaboration across teams, breaking down silos & building influencing, negotiating & risk management skills.

  • Minefield is a collaboration and silo busting game where four sub groups compete against each other to spend as little as possible of a given budget through detailed planning and effective risk management to win a bonus. Winning this ‘bonus’ is not feasible without use of collaboration, influencing and negotiation skills between the four teams. An experiential activity that gives a numerical measure of effective team performance, based upon a willingness to break down barriers and share knowledge across team boundaries. It’s an ideal activity to ‘test’ the levels of cooperation across teams as the temptation to focus on individual team performance typically overtakes the requirement to consider whole organisation success. • Reprint: R1405K As we increasingly work with colleagues and clients who come from all parts of the world, it is vital to understand how cultural differences affect business. Yet too often we rely on clichés and stereotypes that lead us to false assumptions. To help managers negotiate the complexity of an international work team, INSEAD professor Erin Meyer has developed a tool called the Culture Map, which plots the positions of numerous nationalities along eight behavior scales: Communicating, Evaluating, Persuading, Leading, Deciding, Trusting, Disagreeing, and Scheduling. Meyer suggests that comparing the relative positions of different nationalities along these scales can help us decode how culture influences workplace dynamics. She adds four important rules: Don’t underestimate the challenge. Management and work styles stem from lifelong habits that can be hard to change. Apply multiple perspectives. Be aware of your own expectations and behaviors, but also consider how members of other cultures perceive you and fellow teammates. Find the positive in other approaches. The differences that people of varied backgrounds bring to a work group can be great assets. Continually adjust your position. Be prepared to keep adapting your behavior to meld with the styles of your colleagues.

  • 1 INTRODUCTIONOur academic field of leadership studies is plagued by an unscholarly obsession with fashions and clientelism. We have a pronounced penchant to tell our audiences what they like to hear and what makes us popular rather than what they need to know. Moreover, much of our work suffers from a chronic illusion that the study of leadership pertains to natural sciences and is governed by what to us at least appear to be highly elusive laws of causality. These two afflictions together skew the study of the fuzzy social phenomenon we have come to know as leadership, towards understandings of a world that many find intellectually unappealing, ideologically loaded, and practically misleading.
